Here Are Signs That Unresolved Past Experiences May Be Affecting Your Present-Day Functioning

Emotional & Internal Experience

  • Strong emotional reactions that feel out of proportion to the current situation
  • Difficulty identifying, naming, or trusting emotions
  • Emotional numbness, flatness, or feeling disconnected from joy
  • Chronic shame, guilt, or a sense of “something is wrong with me”
  • Persistent anxiety, unease, or emotional hypervigilance
  • Sudden mood shifts without clear present-day cause
  • Feeling emotionally “stuck” or unable to move on despite insight

Thinking Patterns & Beliefs

  • Rigid or self-critical inner dialogue
  • Core beliefs such as:
    • “I’m too much / not enough”
    • “I can’t rely on others”
    • “If I relax, something bad will happen”
  • Catastrophic thinking or expecting abandonment, rejection, or failure
  • Difficulty trusting one’s own perceptions or decisions
  • Over-intellectualizing feelings as a way to stay safe

Relationship Patterns

  • Repeated cycles of conflict, withdrawal, or rupture in close relationships
  • Fear of intimacy, closeness, or emotional dependence
  • People-pleasing, over-giving, or difficulty saying no
  • Strong reactions to perceived criticism or disapproval
  • Difficulty asking for help or receiving care
  • Choosing emotionally unavailable, unsafe, or familiar (but painful) relationships
  • Alternating between craving connection and pushing people away

Behavioral & Coping Patterns

  • Avoidance of situations, conversations, or emotions that feel threatening
  • Perfectionism, overworking, or excessive self-reliance
  • Procrastination or difficulty completing tasks despite competence
  • Compulsive caretaking, rescuing, or controlling behaviors
  • Use of numbing strategies (overuse of food, screens, substances, busyness)
  • Difficulty resting, slowing down, or being still

Body & Nervous System Responses

  • Chronic tension, pain, headaches, or unexplained physical symptoms
  • Startle responses or being easily overwhelmed
  • Sleep disturbances or chronic fatigue
  • Feeling “on edge,” frozen, or shut down
  • Difficulty sensing hunger, fullness, or physical needs
  • A sense that the body reacts before the mind understands why

Sense of Self & Life Direction

  • Feeling disconnected from purpose, meaning, or identity
  • A sense of living on “autopilot” rather than by choice
  • Difficulty enjoying success or feeling satisfied
  • Fear of change—even when change is desired
  • A sense of carrying emotional weight that doesn’t belong to the present moment

Reminder

These patterns are not signs of weakness. They are evidence of resilience, creativity, and survival. When the past is unresolved, it often asks to be witnessed, understood, and integrated—not erased.

Interpreting This Checklist

Checking multiple items does not mean something is “wrong” with you.
It may indicate that parts of your nervous system and emotional world learned powerful strategies to survive earlier experiences—and may now be asking for understanding, integration, and care.
