HEAL YOUR HEART: RECLAIMING YOURSELF

"HEALING ISN'T ABOUT ERASING THE PAST, IT'S ABOUT RECONNECTING WITH THE PARTS OF YOU THAT WERE LOST, PROTECTED, OR LEFT BEHIND."."

"There are moments in life that change us. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes all at once. Over time, we may realize we no longer feel like ourselves. This is where the work of reclaiming begins."

Healing is often misunderstood as “getting over it” or “moving on.”

What Healing Really Means

At LIFE IN PROGRESS it’s about learning how to::

• feel without being overwhelmed
• reflect without spiraling
• move forward without abandoning yourself

Healing is integration—not avoidance.

In reality, healing is about integrating what happened without losing yourself in it.

Reasons We Lose Ourselves

Survival

We adapt to survive in childhood.

Boundaries

We prioritize others over ourselves.

Avoidance

We want to avoid the pain of processing the past.

Re-Injury

We want to prevent emotional re-injury.

Symptoms

Unprocessed experiences may create symptoms in the present that are beyond are control.

Cope

We lost ourselves in order to adjust, protect, & adapt in ways that once served us.

Take Your Time. START HERE. Move at Your Own Speed

Healing Our Historys'

When the Past Lives in the Present we can choose to move from Survival to Wholeness

No Visible Bruises

Not all wounds are visible. Some live quietly in our nervous system, in our reactions, in the patterns we repeat, and in the relationships we struggle to sustain. Many of us learned how to survive long before we learned how to feel safe. We adapted. We coped. We protected ourselves in ways that made sense at the time. Those strategies were not weaknesses — they were intelligent responses to overwhelming experiences but what once helped us survive can later limit how fully we live.

Nervous System Overload

Healing our histories begins with understanding how trauma and chronic stress shape the body, the brain, and our sense of self. Symptoms such as anxiety, emotional reactivity, shutdown, hyper-independence, people-pleasing, difficulty trusting, or feeling disconnected are not character flaws. They are often signs of a nervous system that has been working overtime to keep you safe.

The first stage of healing is stabilization — learning skills that help regulate the nervous system, increase emotional balance, and create a greater sense of safety in the present. Only when the body and mind feel steadier can deeper processing begin.

Integration

The second stage is gentle exploration and integration. This may involve revisiting experiences, making meaning of them, grieving what was lost, and reclaiming parts of yourself that were silenced or suppressed. Healing does not erase the past. It transforms your relationship to it.

Self-Comparison

Leading from Love means meeting your history with compassion rather than criticism. It means honoring the strength it took to survive — while choosing new skills that allow you to move from survival into wholeness. This page offers education, tools, and pathways designed to support both symptom management and deeper healing work — at a pace that respects your nervous system and your readiness.

Remember

You are not broken. You adapted. And adaptation can evolve. We cannot change what happened. But we can change how it lives inside us. Start where you are.  Healing is not a single event — it is a skillful, compassionate process. And every step toward awareness is a step toward freedom.

TRAUMA

Trauma is defined as an overwhelming experience that shatters an individual’s fundamental, preexisting worldview, replacing beliefs of safety, benevolence, and predictability with a, often long-lasting, perception of a dangerous, chaotic, and untrustworthy world.

TRAUMA IS A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN WORLD VIEW

This “shattered assumptions” perspective highlights how trauma causes deep-seated cognitive shifts, leading to intense feelings of personal vulnerability. An overwhelming experience for someone depends on many things beside the longevity and severity of the traumatic event(s) including sensitivity of their central nervous system, age, health, general well being, security of attachment figures, and support in the past, immediate, and  environment.

Shattered Assumptions: According to the shattered assumptions theory (Janoff-Bulman), trauma destroys core beliefs that the world is safe and that oneself is competent, leading to intense fear and anxiety.

Fundamental Changes: Trauma often alters views on personal invulnerability, the goodness of others, and self-worth. It frequently causes a, often, permanent shift to, often, seeing life as pointless or that one is fundamentally flawed.

Impact on Trust and Safety: Trauma, particularly interpersonal, breaks down trust in others and creates, often, constant hypervigilance (scanning for danger).

Rebuilding a New Worldview: Recovery requires integrating the traumatic event into a new, often,, more, often, realistic (but often, harder to live with) understanding of, often, life's risks, shifting from a state of, often, shattered, often, belief to, often, reconstruction of a, often, new, often, worldview.

Commonly Changed Worldview Beliefs:

"The world is safe"

"The world is dangerous and unpredictable".

I am worthy"

"I am broken, guilty, or to blame".

"People are good"

 "People are untrustworthy/bad".

"I can trust others"

 "I am betrayed/alone".

Words that Say, "Don't Express Your Emotions"

"You shouldn't feel like that"

Of course you should, because you do. Whatever you feel it is ok. It is also ok to express your emotions openly and appropriately.

"Don't be a cry baby"

Please be a cry baby. Unexpressed emotions lead to all types of emotional and physical problems down the road.

"Why do you feel like that?" (negative tone)

Tone can be everything in communicating. A negative tone regarding a feeling can express disapproval vs a neutral tone which would sound more curious. Ideally you could validate that you can understand how the person feels the way they do. (NOTE: It isn't important that you agree with them, it is important that they are understood.)

"You're overreacting"

Perhaps but it is ok to express what you feel, and some of us feel bigger than others.

"It could be worse, at least it's not..."

You feel what you feel, and for you it feels awful just as it is never mind worse. A better response might be OMG that is awful and I am glad that no one was hurt.

"Don't think about it, just get over it,"

Easy to say when you are not living in my brain. This statement both invalidates the persons feelings but also their experiences. It says stop feeling, I don't want to see you hurting because then I hurt too, and I don't want to hurt, so stop it.

"I'm not talking about this,..Stop bringing the mood down."

How dare you feel bad! Codependency to your feelings cause these types of reactions. Again they are being impacted by your mood versus being curious about why you are feeling like you do and holding space to share it.

"You shouldn't feel like that" "Don't be a cry baby" "Why do you feel like that?" (negative tone) "You're overreacting" "It could be worse, at least it's not..." "Don't think about it, just get over it," "I'm not talking about this,..Stop bringing the mood down."

Healing from Trauma is easy?

No. Everyone heals differently. Healing from trauma is rarely easy.

Trauma can result from a shift in worldview?

Yes. Especially when one views the world as general a safe and kind place to be, and experiences an event that places that world view into question.

Why are grounding techniques essential to healing?

Grounding techniques help manage symptoms related to trauma that enable you to not be swept away by triggers into past emotions, images, physical experiences or behaviors in the present.

You should believe all the messages you were given as a child?

Of course not. Although many parents are benevolent and mean will many lack the skills to be good parents. Some people should not have been parents.

Sharing helps healing?

Yes. Sharing with a safe person helps healing.  A mental health professional can be a good listener and a safe person to share with about your trauma.
