MASTER CLASS IN DEMYSTIFYING EMOTIONS

"I have always been mystified by people that are not okay with the emotions of others. After all isn't that what we all want? The intimacy of connection to be able to share our emotions and for others to be able to hold space for those emotions? Yet often we shut others down in the midst of sharing their emotions. If I had a dime for every time someone told me that I was 'over sensitive', 'stop crying', or heard others shut people down because they were angry or upset and that made the person doing the stopping uncomfortable, I could have retired before I was 35. Unfortunately we live in a world that has a low tolerance for emotions especially intense emotions. In essence emotions are body sensations we have learned to label. The importance of emotions in all areas of our lives is often minimized. Decision making is one of the key areas that needs the balanced mind approach to reach that place of knowing. That knowing is essential in choice making. "

Understand emotions more fully, be able to hold space for others emotions—one intentional choice at a time.

Stop waiting for closeness and intimacy to enter your life stage left.

Learn how to intentionally create rich, meaningful, peaceful, and deeply satisfying relationships by being able to fully understand and manage emotions, both yours and others effectively.

Demystifying Emotions

Emotions are not the problem.

Not understanding what to do with them often is.

Most of us receive remarkably little education about our emotions.

We may be taught to control them, hide them, toughen up, calm down, stop crying, stop being angry, or stop being “so sensitive.” Others may learn to express every feeling immediately, assuming that because an emotion is real, whatever it urges us to do must also be right.

Neither approach teaches us how emotions actually work.

Our emotions are an essential part of being human. They help alert us to danger, loss, connection, injustice, pleasure, disappointment, belonging, and unmet needs. They influence our decisions, motivate action, communicate information to others, and contribute to our ability to connect with empathy and compassion.

Demystifying Emotions is designed to help you understand this internal system rather than fear it, dismiss it, or be controlled by it.

In this training, you will explore what emotions are, why we have them, what they may be trying to communicate, and how thoughts, experiences, physical sensations, interpretations, and circumstances influence what we feel.

You will also begin developing one of the

most important emotional skills of all:

Learning to experience an emotion without

automatically assuming that the emotion tells you

the complete truth about what is happening

—or dictates what you must do next.

The goal is not to become less emotional.

The goal is to become more emotionally skilled.

What You’ll Practice

Through the lessons, reflections, and exercises

in this training, you will practice how to:

  • Understand the purpose and function of emotions.
  • Become more accurate in identifying and naming what you are feeling.
  • Notice how emotions show up physically in your body.
  • Recognize the connection between thoughts, interpretations, circumstances, physical states, and emotions.
  • Understand why different people can experience very
  • different emotions in response to the same event.
  • Recognize that emotions provide valuable information
  • without necessarily providing the entire picture.
  • Learn to distinguish between having a feeling and acting on a feeling.
  • Become curious about what an emotion may be communicating
  • rather than immediately trying to get rid of it.
  • Recognize when an emotional response may be influenced by previous experiences rather than only by what is happening in the present.
  • Notice patterns in the emotions that arise repeatedly
  • in particular situations or relationships.
  • Increase your ability to tolerate uncomfortable emotions without immediately escaping, suppressing, or reacting to them.
  • Recognize when an emotion fits the circumstances and
  • when additional information may be needed.
  • Respond more compassionately to your own emotional experiences.
  • Become more comfortable when other people express emotion.
  • Develop greater empathy by understanding that another
  • person’s emotional experience may differ from your own.
  • Communicate emotions in ways that promote understanding
  • rather than unnecessarily escalating conflict.
  • Use emotional information alongside facts, values,
  • experience, and reason when making decisions.

Emotions Are Information—not Commands

One of the most useful distinctions we can make is

between listening to an emotion and obeying an emotion.

Anger may tell us that something feels unfair.

Fear may alert us to possible danger.

Sadness may signal loss.

Guilt may invite us to examine whether our behavior fits our values.

Joy may help us recognize what brings meaning,

pleasure, or connection into our lives.

But feeling something intensely does not automatically

mean our interpretation is completely accurate or that

the action our emotion urges us to take will be helpful.

We can listen.

We can investigate.

We can check what else we know.

And then we can choose.

That is emotional maturity—not the absence of strong feelings,

but the ability to remain in relationship with our emotions

without surrendering our decision-making to them.

There Is No Prize for Feeling Less

Emotional sensitivity is sometimes treated as though it is a weakness.

Yet sensitivity also contributes to empathy, connection, compassion, creativity, intuition, responsiveness, and our ability to recognize

subtle changes in ourselves and the people around us.

The challenge is not necessarily to become less sensitive.

The challenge is to develop enough skill to manage sensitivity effectively.

Likewise, people who have learned to shut emotions down are

not necessarily unemotional. Often, they have simply become

highly practiced at disconnecting from emotional information.

Healthy emotional functioning exists somewhere between

being overrun by emotion and disconnected from it.

We are learning to feel, understand, evaluate, and respond.

Who Is This Training For?

Demystifying Emotions may be especially helpful if you:

  •
  • Have been told you are “too emotional,” “too sensitive,” or “too much.”
  • Tend to suppress emotions until they become overwhelming.
  • Have difficulty identifying what you are feeling.
  • Become uncomfortable when other people express strong emotions.
  • React quickly when angry, afraid, hurt, or disappointed.
  • Assume that because you feel something strongly,
  • it must be completely true.
  • Frequently judge yourself for having certain emotions.
  • Try to talk yourself out of feelings rather than understanding them.
  • Have difficulty expressing emotions without becoming overwhelmed.
  • Tend to intellectualize experiences while
  • overlooking emotional information.
  • Want to become more empathic toward yourself and others.
  • Want to make decisions that include both emotional
  • information and thoughtful reasoning.
  • Want stronger emotional regulation and relationship skills.

Understanding emotions is foundational to nearly everything else we do.

It influences the way we communicate, love, parent,

set boundaries, make decisions, tolerate distress, resolve conflict, understand ourselves, and respond to other human beings.

We do not need to fear our emotions.

We need to learn their language.

When we stop treating emotions as enemies to defeat and begin treating them as information to understand, we gain another powerful source of wisdom about ourselves, others, and the lives we are creating.

The Science. The Skills. The Daily Practices.
