"Intense emotions that arise today are often linked to our histories. If we find ourselves reacting to similar things over and over again despite good management of our vulnerabilities we may have unprocessed emotions from the past that are interfering with our ability to effectively connect with others today. The good news is that in most cases these unprocessed emotions can be resolved decreasing our reactivity in the present substantially."

HEALING OUR HISTORIES
Understanding What the Past Still Brings Into the Present
The past is over. Its influence may not be.
Every one of us arrives in the present carrying a history.
Families.
Relationships.
Losses.
Successes.
Failures.
Love.
Rejection.
Messages about who we were supposed to be.
Things we learned to expect from other people.
Ways we learned to protect ourselves.
Experiences that taught our bodies what felt safe—and what did not.
Some of that history gave us strength.
Some gave us wisdom.
Some created patterns that once helped us survive
but may no longer fit the lives we are living now.
Healing Our Histories helps you explore the ways
earlier experiences continue to influence
present-day thoughts, emotions, expectations,
relationships, and reactions.
The goal is not to blame the past for
everything happening today.
Nor is it to spend the rest of your life living there.
It is to develop enough awareness to recognize:
“Something from then may be influencing what is happening in me now.”
Once we can make that distinction, we gain choices.
We can honor what happened.
Understand what we learned.
Recognize what protected us.
Keep what remains useful.
And begin changing what no longer belongs in the present.
What You’ll Practice
You will practice how to:
Your History Is Not Only a Story You Remember
History can live in expectations.
A raised voice immediately feels dangerous.
Distance feels like abandonment.
Criticism feels catastrophic.
Someone else’s disappointment creates panic.
Conflict feels intolerable.
Affection feels suspicious.
You work endlessly because rest once felt unsafe.
You avoid needing others because dependence once hurt.
Sometimes our bodies and emotions react before
our thinking mind has had time to examine what is happening.
Healing begins with noticing:
“My response makes sense in light of what I learned—
but does it fit what is happening now?”
What Protected You Then May Limit You Now
Perhaps you learned to:
Stay quiet.
Please everyone.
Become invisible.
Take care of others.
Never depend on anyone.
Control everything.
Be perfect.
Stay constantly alert.
Avoid conflict.
Use humor whenever emotion appeared.
Disconnect from feelings.
These strategies were not necessarily weaknesses.
Many were intelligent adaptations.
The question is whether they still serve you.
Healing does not require condemning the survival strategy.
It allows us to thank it for what it once did—
and develop something more appropriate for the life we have now.
Explanation Is Not Destiny
History explains.
It does not absolve us of responsibility.
“This is why I react this way”
Can become the beginning of change.
But:
“This is why I react this way, so everyone else
has to accommodate it forever”
Keeps the past in charge.
Healing empowers us with both choice and responsibility.
We can understand why something is difficult
and still practice doing it differently.
Grieve What Was Missing
Some wounds are created by what happened.
Others by what did not.
Protection that never arrived.
Affection that was absent.
Encouragement never offered.
Safety never established.
An apology never given.
A childhood that required too much too soon.
Part of healing may involve grieving what
cannot now be supplied retroactively.
Grief helps us stop requiring the present to
continually compensate for the past.
Keep the Strengths
Healing is not about discarding your history.
Your history may also have given you:
Courage.
Empathy.
Creativity.
Persistence.
Sensitivity.
Resourcefulness.
Humor.
Compassion.
Strength.
Discernment.
The goal is not to become someone untouched by what happened.
It is to become someone who can
Carry the wisdom without remaining imprisoned by the wound.
Who Is This Training For?
Healing Our Histories may be especially helpful if you:
Healing does not require forgetting where you came from.
It means learning how to stop letting the past make today’s decisions.
