FORTIFY THE FOUNDATION

"IF WE WANT TO REGULATE OUR EMOTIONS BETTER WE START WITH GOOD SELF-CARE. POOR SELF CARE LEAVES US VULNERABLE TO IMPULSIVE REACTIONS, STRONG INTERNAL RESPONSES TO STIMULI WITHIN OURSELVES OR OUR ENVIRONMENT. WE SPEAK OF HANGRY CHILDREN BUT FAIL TO REALIZE THAT WHEN WE DO NOT CARE PROPERLY FOR OURSELVES, WE BECOME THE HANGRY CHILDREN."

Self-care is a necessity—not a selfish indulgence

In reality, self care is about emotional stability and quality functioning not an optional activity.

Reasons We Fail to Care for Ourselves

Guilt

Feelings of guilt overwhelm us when we place our needs over the needs of others.

Boundaries

We do not set limits when our self-care time is at risk. We prioritize the needs of others over our own.

Self-Care is Earned

Self-care is not to be earned. It is essential to our well-being.

Mythology

We believe the culture expects us to care for others before we care for ourselves.

Too Busy

My schedule is too full. I do not have time to care for myself. Who manages your schedule? That’s right so modify your schedule to allow for self-care.

Poor Self-Esteem

I am not worth caring for…

Waste of Time

If you believe that self-care has little value for you, you are unlikely to make time to take care of yourself. However all the research supports the importance of self-care.

Self-Care is a Cornerstone to Emotional well-Being

Emotional Balance Begins with the Basics

Regulate Emotions the Key to Health

When emotional balance is supported, daily life becomes more manageable. Subsequently we are better able to regulate stress, think clearly, and make choices that align with our values rather than reacting from overwhelm or habit. Therefore emotional skills form the groundwork for resilience, healthy relationships, and sustainable personal growth.

Self-Care the Foundation to Regulate Emotions

Many of us were never taught how to care for our emotional world in practical, skill-based ways. In contrast, we learned to push through, manage symptoms, or hold ourselves to standards that quietly erode well-being. On the other hand, strengthening the foundation invites a different approach — one rooted in awareness, compassion, and the understanding that balance is something we practice, not something we achieve once and for all.

Self-Care as Skill

The practices and skills that follow are designed to support this kind of grounded well-being. Furthermore, they offer simple, accessible ways to build emotional balance over time — meeting yourself where you are, and growing forward with steadiness, clarity, and care.

Start where you are — the foundation is built one skill at a time.

IMPORTANCE OF REGULATING EMOTIONS

LEARN TO RIDE THE WAVE

Why is an ocean wave often regarded as an apt metaphor for emotions?

Like waves, emotions can rise and fall, sometimes building gradually and other times surging suddenly. They can be calm and gentle or powerful and overwhelming, reflecting the dynamic and unpredictable nature of human feelings. Just as waves are influenced by external forces like wind and tides, emotions are shaped by external circumstances and internal experiences. This comparison highlights the fluidity, depth, and transformative power of emotions, much like the ever-changing sea.

The Importance of Regulating Emotions

Regulating emotions is a critical skill that influences personal well-being, decision-making, relationships, and the overall quality of life. Emotional regulation refers to the ability to manage and respond to emotional experiences in a constructive and balanced way, rather than allowing emotions to overwhelm or control your actions. Here are several reasons why it is important to regulate your emotions:

1. **Improves Mental Health**
Unregulated emotions, such as chronic anger, anxiety, or sadness, can lead to mental health challenges, including depression and stress-related disorders. By managing emotions effectively, individuals can reduce the risk of emotional burnout and maintain psychological stability.

2. **Enhances Decision-Making**
Strong emotions can cloud judgment and lead to impulsive decisions. Emotional regulation allows individuals to think more clearly and make thoughtful, rational choices, even in high-pressure situations.

3. **Strengthens Relationships**
Emotional outbursts or poor emotional control can strain personal and professional relationships. Regulating emotions helps foster empathy, effective communication, and conflict resolution, which are essential for building and maintaining healthy connections with others.

4. **Increases Resilience**
Life is full of challenges, and emotional regulation equips individuals with the ability to cope with adversity. By staying calm and composed, people can navigate difficult situations more effectively and recover from setbacks more quickly.

5. **Boosts Productivity and Performance**
In professional settings, unchecked emotions can hinder focus and productivity. Emotional regulation helps individuals stay motivated, manage stress, and perform at their best, even under demanding circumstances.

6. **Promotes Physical Health**
Chronic stress and negative emotions can take a toll on physical health, contributing to issues such as high blood pressure, weakened immunity, and sleep disturbances. Managing emotions helps reduce stress and supports overall physical well-being.

7. **Encourages Personal Growth**
By recognizing and addressing emotions in a healthy way, individuals can gain deeper self-awareness and grow emotionally. This self-awareness fosters personal development and helps people build a stronger sense of identity.

In conclusion, regulating emotions is essential for maintaining balance in all aspects of life. It empowers individuals to handle challenges effectively, nurture positive relationships, and achieve personal and professional success. Developing this skill requires practice, mindfulness, and self-reflection, but the benefits are invaluable for long-term happiness and well-being.

What Gets in the Way of Self-Care

"I cannot let my mother down."

Yes, you can. People pleasing at the cost of your own self-care will result in resentment and burn-out.

"I forgot to pay the electric bill. I have to go down town and pay it. I don't have time for lunch."

Problem solve: Can you pay your bill online or over the phone? Can you take your lunch with you and eat it on the way? How can you prevent this crisis from happening again?

"IIt is not important that I get 8 hours of sleep. I can go without.""

Perhaps you can but is that in your long-term best interest or the best interest of those around you?

"I absolutely can get it all done in one day. I won't eat or sleep but it will get done.""

Why? Few responsibilities need to be rushed. In reality taking breaks, eating, sleeping will speed the process up versus going without because your mind and body will be rested and fueled.

"No one else can do it right. I have to do it."

Give others a chance to improve. Letting go of some responsibilities allows you more time for self-care and let's others grow.

"I cannot let my mother down." "I forgot to pay the electric bill. I have to go down town and pay it. I don't have time for lunch." "IIt is not important that I get 8 hours of sleep. I can go without."" "I absolutely can get it all done in one day. I won't eat or sleep but it will get done."" "No one else can do it right. I have to do it."

Reclaiming your self-care is not a an option but a deeply important investment in yourself and your future. Self-care is transformative.

-Make self care a priority

-put it on the calendar

-understand it is necessary not selfishness

-release responsibilities that are not yours

Set limits that honor the importance of caring for yourself.
