PARENTING PERKS

"...many of us continue to trip over ourselves without the right skills. Using addictions, blaming others (including our children), being victims of circumstances, and unaware that everything we want is within our reach if we would choose to develop healthier and more effective skills. We deprive our children of healthy skills when we deny our own shortcomings. If we want to give our children the skills they need for a meaningful life in a rapidly changing world then we must embrace learning them first."

Creating Better Humans

life In Progress

Helping you one skill at at time to improve your interactions with your children.

At LIFE IN PROGRESS parenting Is about learning how to:

• be a better parent
• add more skills to your parenting tool box
• understand how your past influences your parenting

Parenting is a career that you will always need to be refining and transitioning along with your children’s shifting phases- it is not an ego driven control trip in which we parents know it all. In reality, parenting is about caring for the children that have been gifted to you for part of your life’s journey. It is your responsibility to protect them, nourish them and help them transition into contributing members of society, i.e., decent humans.

Ways We Fail Our Children

Lack of Healing

We fail to heal our own history passing family trauma, addictions, and dysfunction on to the next generation.

Fail to Learn

In the 1960’s there was one book on parenting. Today there are 1000s. There is not reason to not learn how to become a better parent.

Ego

We think we know how to parent thus we do not need advice or ideas on how to be a better parent. Arrogance will stifle our children’s growth.

Lack of Support

There is much truth in the statement, “it takes a village to raise a child.” It may not be a requirement but it helps. Additional support supplies parents with breaks, allows children a wider range of role models and mentors. More options for learning skills.

Lack of Resources

Parents that lack adequate resources to raise their children have distinct disadvantages in raising them. These children are at greater risk than children raised with adequate resources. Yet some very successful people have come from profoundly deprived childhoods but they are the rare exceptions.

Too Indulgent

Over indulging our children can cripple them in becoming independent contributing adults.

Over Protective

Coddling children may keep them from learning early skills needed in life. For example, doing some things we do not want to do is necessary. In most cases life will hand us tasks we do not want to do but we chose to do them versus suffering the consequences

Lack of Healthy Skills

Poor parenting skills can damage children to the point that some never recover. In today’s world there is no reason to have poor parenting skills. Start reading, listen to books on tape,, watch docuseries, podcasts, magazines, seminars, and classes are everywhere. Check your local library. Find resources on-line.

Towards Better Parenting

Perks for parents that wish to Become Positive role models for their children

Parenting a Career

Most parents want to be the best role models they can be for their children but fewer take the time to educate themselves beyond what they learned from their own parents. They think that their parents did an okay job raising them so it should work for their children.

 They Need a Hero

If only it were that easy , first we know that not everyone had an okay childhood.  Often  parents want to not do what their parents did but if not that then what? Every generation faces changes, and the advancement of technology and science  will continue to create a world that evolves at an even faster pace.

Be the Hero Parent

Given these facts how do we prepare our children for a world that we may not recognize by the time they graduate from high school. These new skills beyond those of science and technology are sometimes referred to as soft skills I would venture to refer to them as  the necessity skills. The skills our children will need to continue to create a happy & positive life for themselves are not taught in school systems. Hopefully they will learn many at home from us, their parents.

Power Up for Parenting

Today many of us continue to trip over ourselves without the right skills. Using addictions, blaming others, being victims of circumstances, and unaware that everything we want is within our reach if we would choose to develop healthier and more effective skills. We deprive our children of healthy skills when we deny our own shortcomings. If we want to give our children the skills they need for a meaningful life in a rapidly changing world then we must embrace learning them first.  This may seem an overwhelming task but here you can learn one skill at a time.

Life in Progress is here to help. This is a small sample of what we hope to continue to offer. Take your time look around. No pressure, just support to help you be the best for yourself and your children.

PARENTING TO RAISE HAPPY HEALTHY PRODUCTIVE CHILDREN

Our philosophy at LIFE IN PROGRESS views parenting not only as a biological role, but as a deliberate career & a commitment to becoming a positive hero for your children.

TRAUMA IS A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN WORLD VIEW

Based on the philosophy presented in Parenting Perks, parenting is viewed not just as a biological role, but as a deliberate career and a commitment to becoming a positive hero for your children.

To raise happy, healthy, and productive children, parenting is defined through these core pillars:

1. The "Hero Parent" Philosophy

Parenting is the act of evolving beyond the "okay" methods learned from previous generations. It requires a parent to actively educate themselves to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. A "Hero Parent" prepares children for the future by mastering and teaching necessity skills (soft skills) that aren't typically taught in schools.

2. Building Resilience Against Trauma

A critical part of raising healthy children is understanding and mitigating the impact of Trauma. As it relates to parenting, this means:

  • Protecting the Worldview: Helping children maintain a sense of safety, benevolence, and predictability.

  • Shattered Assumptions: Recognizing that trauma can destroy a child's belief in their own worth and the goodness of others. Parenting involves being the "secure attachment figure" that provides the support needed to navigate an unpredictable world.

3. Mastery of "Necessity Skills"

To ensure productivity and happiness, parenting involves the consistent application of specific behavioral systems and relational arts:

  • Routine & Systems: Implementing structures like an AM Routine for Kids to create stability.

  • The Art of Listening: Mastering the ability to "listen without solving," which is identified as the key to deep, long-term relationships.

  • Positive Communication: Learning to give negative feedback in a way that maintains positive feelings and keeps lines of communication open.

  • Active Connection: Choosing to "turn toward" children rather than away, which fundamentally shapes the long-term bond.

4. Proactive Safety and Well-being

Raising a healthy child requires vigilance in both physical safety (such as Car Seat Safety) and social safety, such as identifying and stopping Sibling Violence before it causes lasting damage.

Key Takeaway: Parenting is defined as the choice to stop "tripping over ourselves" with old habits or addictions and instead choosing to grow, develop new skills, and provide the emotional tracking and support children need to thrive.
