WHAT ARE THE BASICS?

giving you the tools you need
"Self-improvement requires learning, practicing, generalizing, and refining skills. These actions require foundational tools and methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the skills used. A few basic skills are helpful in these processes."
MARSHA FERRICK
Helping you one skill at at time to improve your interactions through review & assessment.
At LIFE IN PROGRESS the basics are about learning how to:
• Assess the effectiveness of our skill use
• Identify our vulnerabilities
• Consider alternative skills that might be more effective in similar circumstances
The basics are about not making the same mistake over and over again not about blaming others. In reality, the basics are the guidebook or game film to a better us by increasing awareness and insight so we stop blaming others and becoming an adult that takes responsibility for their actions.
We lack self-awareness and insight into our role when things do not go right.
We are unable to see how our actions are a part of how things go sideways in ineffective interactions.
It is way easier to blame others than it is to correct our own actions but blame keeps us powerless and in the victim role in our lives.
Once we are stuck in the victim role there is no way out because we have moved ourselves into a position of powerlessness. Until we move into a role of ownership we remain mired in our own misery. Once we move to ownership our choices multiply.
Fragile ego says that we cannot be wrong. If we are wrong we will splinter into pieces and no longer exist. Once we can acknowledge that we are human that with our humanness comes the capacity to error we can begin to move into adulthood.
Failure to assess and evaluate what went wrong and what well leaves us limit. Utilizing the same skills over and over again with the same unattended vulnerabilities and thus we continue to get the same results. Hence ground hogs day again!
Problems and challenges are a part of everyday living but few of us were given all the tools we need to overcome never mind succeed in a world that is rapidly changing. The ability to adapt and to be effective in today’s world is exceedingly challenging. Therefore are options have become more limited.
Given this there are only two alternatives 1) consciously determine to grow and change or 2) regress to extinction. Luckily, it isn’t complicated, but it is a choice to grow and become an effective individual in your life.
It means giving up being right all the time. It means being intentional in word and deed. It means learning, practicing, refining and trying again. Relinquishing the right to blame others for your words and actions. In the end it means growing up and choosing to act as an adult in a world that too often devolves into petty childish behaviors instead of reasonable discourse.
Life in Progress is here to help you. Explore the the titles below for skills you will need to learn and perfect other skills.
The Basics Tools are tools that you can use to measure the effectiveness of the skill(s) you use throughout the day. In reviewing your day consider the skills that you used and how effective they were or not. What worked? What didn't? Were there vulnerabilities (see Foundation Fortifiers) If the skill was not effective or there were vulnerabilities what could you do differently next time? How might you refine the skills? What other skill(s) might you try? How might you minimize or eliminate the vulnerabilities? Like any other new learning we must review how effective the skill is or how effective we are utilizing it? Continuing the growth & refinement process towards becoming our best self.

Blaming others will never improve your lot.
Said without hesitation it sounds like denial, a reaction to criticism. A better response might be, Do I? I had not noticed that. Thank you I will pay more attention to that.
Does it matter who started the conversation? How old do you sound when you make this statement.
This is invalidating someone else's feelings. If one person is upset the other one should also be upset. It may be at different levels of intensity but it doesn't mean anyone is overreacting.
Here we have moved to victim mode. We have disempowered ourselves. The problem and solution are now in someone else's hands. A better response might be, "help me understand what I did that is so upsetting to you." Simple, elegant adult.
Again we have take the victim role, given up power, and handed to the other person. A better response might be, "This keeps coming up it sounds like it is a problem for you so let's talk it through so I can really understand it then perhaps we can come to a better resolution about it." Again an adult response, let's talk more, I can hold space for your feelings around this, I care about you, we can get through this together.
Owning your life is the best decision you can make…now you have taken back your power to manage yourself & your lifeÂ
A behavior chain analysis is an assessment of past behavior for efffectiveness.
Running game film is a shortened version of a BCA that can be done in your head for a quick on the spot evaluation so corrections can be done immediately if needed.
Like top athletes reviewing our behaviors helps us make better choices and enhance our skills over time.
The ability to observe, and describe is primary to completing an assessment before the evaluation begins. Then it helps us be an observer (dual awareness) of our behavior as we consider our part and what would have done better.
This is the place we make the best evaluations and choices for the future.
