Emotions regularly get in our way. We may flood and present as overly emotinally or we may shut down and present as uncaring or unfeeling when we are in effect experience intentse emotions. Learning to manage feelings productively and in a healthy manner improves our health, our relationships, our decision making. Emotions are not secondary or unneeded, they are what makes us human beings. Every day people run away from their emotions hiding them in everything from business to drug addiction. Unfortunately avoiding our emotions or someone elses emotions ends up keeping us along and solitary from others. Yet emotions are not to be feared they are the gateway to intimacy, empathy, and belonging. Too often we turn away from the people we love and that love us the most because we fear intense emotion, our natural empathetic nature makes us relate to those we love at a very real and physiological level of emotions but if we cannot even tolerate our own intense emotions., how will we veer be able to provide a safe space for those we love to share their feelings with honesty? Understanding, engaging, and dancing with emotions is not optional but essential to lving a well lived life. Living life is not about travel, or adreline seeking experiences, or championship games, nor the biggest house, the best view, or the flashiest car. A life well lived it about connecting with others by first connecting with ourselves, and what it means for us to be human, and then being able to do that with others. An easy three step process. First you locate the skill you think you need. Gain the understanding you need to use it.
Next you practice the skill in the situation(s) you feel you could do better. See if it works or at least improves the interaction.Â
